Finding the perfect dress shape to complement and flatter your body type may seem like a rather tiresome task.
It comes down to being able to identify your body shape and what flatters it over sporting the latest trending outfits. Highlighting the best features on your body will not only make you feel fantastic but look it too!
Here are 5 basic female body shapes and the dress styles that will enhance your looks for an even better-looking silhouette.
1. Apple body type
If you have an apple body shape, most of your weight concentration is above the hips, with little to undefined waistline.
To help take attention away from your mid-section, focus on flaunting your best assets – usually the bust and legs. A-line, wrap styles and empire cuts are ideal waist cinching options to slim your silhouette.
Opt for belted styles, wide and low necklines, loose and flared sleeves and full skirts. Off-the shoulder and shorter lengths which bare skin can draw the eye so show them off when you have a chance. Avoid figurehugging dresses at all costs.
2. Pear body type
The pear-shaped body is focused on the lower region of your body. Your bottom, hips and thighs are visually larger compared to your upper body.
The key to dressing this body shape is to create the illusion of volume on the upper body while defining the waist.
The best styles include A-line, bias cut, asymmetrical and drape with focus on the top half of the dress. Dresses with wide and scooped neckline, ruched or ruffled details will add interest to the top of the body.
Structured shoulders can widen the shoulder line and a fitted bodice can accentuate the waist. Think puff sleeves and flutter sleeves.
3. Hourglass body type
This body type is the most balanced, with a proportionate top and bottom and a well- defined waistline. With a well-balanced figure, dresses should follow the outline of your curves.
Needless to say, body-hugging dresses that cinch in at the waist will really flaunt your figure. Slightly rounded necklines like oval, jewel and slimming v-necklines are great styles suited to the natural silhouette of the hourglass body.
A selection of flattering sleeves includes sleeveless, set-in and fitted at different lengths.
4. Rectangle body shape
The rectangle-shaped body is usually well-balanced from the shoulders to the hips. It’s similar to an hourglass shape but without the defined waistline.
A great dress to have in your wardrobe is one that is balanced on the top and bottom whilst pulling in the waist.
Empire line, princess seam, fit and flare and wrap dresses are excellent styles. Enhance your silhouette by showing off your arms and legs.
Sleeveless, off-the-shoulder, sweetheart and v-neckline are some of the few flattering necklines that will visually lengthen the shoulder and bust area.
4. Inverted triangle body shape
This body shape is characterised by broad shoulders and bust that narrow down to the hips.
The right dresses for the inverted triangle body add volume at the hips to balance the shoulders.
Deep and narrow scoop and v-necklines will visually reduce the width of the shoulders while asymmetric styles break up the chest vertically.
Short sleeves should be fitted whilst long sleeves should add volume around the hips.
Styles that flare from the waist or hips with patterns and pleats will draw the eye downwards, away from the shoulders.
A-line, bias cut, straight and tiered dresses also work well.
