Style Tip: How to Make Hips Look Slimmer

As much of an asset that wide hips can be, there are those of us who aren’t necessarily thrilled with this feminine feature.

There are three basic ways to bring the top and bottom in balance with one another.

These are: adding volume to the top, drawing attention to the top and minimising the bottom. Adding volume to the neck and shoulder area can balance out healthy hips and thighs. This can be done through shoulder pads, puff and cap sleeves, pussybow neckline and even choosing a thicker and more structured fabric that stands away from the body and adds bulk. Avoid sleeves that are full at the cuffs as this will add unwanted volume to the lower body. Wearing bright colours, busy patterns, metallics and glitter will all attract attention to the upper body. Why not try a flattering deep v-neckline or a shoulder-flaunting piece and you’ll immediately reduce the size of your hips by redirecting attention to another area of you figure.

For the lower body, dark and solid colours absorb light which creates a more slender and streamlined effect. Look for black, charcoal grey, chocolate brown and midnight-navy hues. Slim your hip shape by wearing full length trousers in bootcut, wide leg or straight leg fit. These fits should fit the widest part of your hip and create a straight line down which elongates and slims. Fitted pencil skirts with a high waist are very flattering. You can also opt for an a-line skirt that ends at or sits just below the knee.

The best dresses that work for pear-shaped body types are wrap dresses with empire waist and an a-line skirt. When a wrap dress is properly tied or belted in place, it will bring your upper body and lower body into proportion with one another. A classic little black dress is another wardrobe essential but make sure to stay away from styles that are too body-hugging. Pick something with gathers or ruching that sit at the mid-waist. They’ll look amazing.

The key to dressing your body type is striking the right proportional balance. Do it right and you’ll be able to feel confident at all times.
