Sulwhasoo in Seoul: My Korean Skincare Set and Beauty Experience
I recently came back from Seoul, where I spent several days exploring Korean beauty and wellness. One of my stops was Sulwhasoo, a Korean luxury beauty brand known for its use of ginseng, its skincare research and its distinctive approach to Korean beauty. I visited Sulwhasoo to discover the brand in its home market, but I also wanted to understand how its products fit into a modern skincare routine. Here are the products that caught my attention, along with my experience of Sulwhasoo in Seoul.
Sulwhasoo: A Korean Luxury Beauty Brand
Sulwhasoo has been developing skincare inspired by Korean herbal medicine and ginseng for decades. The brand combines traditional Korean ingredients with modern cosmetic research and positions itself in the luxury beauty market.
Ginseng is particularly important to the brand. Sulwhasoo has developed extensive research around different forms of ginseng and uses it across several of its skincare lines.
The brand also puts a strong emphasis on the experience surrounding its products. This becomes especially clear when visiting its Seoul boutiques.
Sulwhasoo’s boutiques in Seoul are beautifully designed and feel more like carefully curated destinations than traditional beauty stores. The architecture, interiors and product displays are all part of the experience.
House of Sulwhasoo Bukchon
The House of Sulwhasoo in Bukchon was one of the places I wanted to see during my Seoul trip.
Bukchon is known for its traditional Korean houses and historic streets, so the location already gives the visit a strong connection to Korean culture. Inside, Sulwhasoo combines traditional references with contemporary interiors.
The space presents the brand’s history, products and approach to Korean craftsmanship. Rather than simply being a retail space, it gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about Sulwhasoo and its heritage.
For anyone interested in Korean skincare, it is worth including on a Seoul beauty itinerary.
Sulwhasoo Dosan
The other major location is Sulwhasoo Dosan in Gangnam.
This flagship is much more contemporary. It brings together the Sulwhasoo boutique, heritage spaces, cultural areas, lounges and spa facilities.
The building itself is impressive, but what I found most interesting was how many different parts of the brand are presented in one place.
You can discover the skincare collections, learn about Sulwhasoo’s history, shop, visit the spa and spend time in the different spaces within the building.
It is also one of the best places to understand how Sulwhasoo positions itself as a luxury Korean beauty brand.
The Korean Skincare Set I Discovered
I prefer a relatively edited skincare routine, particularly when travelling. After spending so much time exploring Korean beauty in Seoul, I was interested in finding products that could work together without creating an unnecessarily complicated routine.
A practical Korean skincare set can be built around a few key steps: cleansing, treatment, hydration, targeted care and sun protection.
These are the Sulwhasoo products that stood out to me.
Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam
The first step is the Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam.
It is a daily foaming cleanser designed to remove impurities while leaving the skin feeling comfortable rather than tight.
For me, this is an important part of any routine. A cleanser does not need to be complicated. Its main job is to effectively cleanse the skin without making it feel stripped.
The Gentle Cleansing Foam works well as the starting point for a Sulwhasoo routine.
Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum
The Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum is probably the product most associated with the brand.
Unlike a conventional serum that you might apply later in your routine, First Care Activating Serum is designed to be used immediately after cleansing.
The current sixth-generation formula uses Sulwhasoo’s ginseng research and focuses on hydration, skin resilience and visible signs of ageing.
I particularly like its position in the routine. It is straightforward to use and does not require you to completely rethink the rest of your skincare.
Apply it after cleansing and then continue with your usual treatment and moisturising products.
Sulwhasoo Eye Cream
Eye care is another category where Sulwhasoo has several options.
The brand offers products including the First Care Activating Perfecting Eye Cream and Concentrated Ginseng Rejuvenating Eye Cream.
A Sulwhasoo eye cream can be added after your serum and before your moisturiser, depending on the specific product and routine.
For me, eye care is particularly relevant when travelling. After long flights and changes in climate, the eye area is often one of the first places where tiredness becomes noticeable.
A targeted product makes sense here, especially if you already enjoy using an eye cream as part of your routine.
Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask
For the evening, I was particularly interested in the Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Mask.
It is designed as a final skincare step at night and provides a richer treatment while you sleep.
This is also the type of product I find useful after travelling. Rather than adding another treatment every morning, you can incorporate a richer mask into your evening routine when your skin needs additional moisture and comfort.
It is an easy product to add without making the whole routine significantly longer.
Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion
Sulwhasoo also extends into makeup, and the Sulwhasoo Perfecting Cushion is one of the products I was curious to see in person.
The cushion provides complexion coverage together with SPF 50+/PA+++ protection. The standard Perfecting Cushion offers medium coverage and a semi-matte finish.
I like cushions particularly for travel because they are compact and easy to use. You do not need to carry a separate foundation bottle and makeup sponge, and you can easily touch up during the day.
Sulwhasoo also offers the Perfecting Cushion Airy, which has lighter coverage and a more natural finish.
For someone who prefers a polished but relatively light complexion, the cushion format is very practical.
Sulwhasoo Spa Seoul
The product range is only one part of the Sulwhasoo experience.
The brand also operates the Sulwhasoo Spa Seoul at its Dosan flagship, with the Sulwhasoo Spa and Sulwhasoo Balance Spa offering different treatment experiences.
This was particularly relevant to me because my Seoul trip was focused on beauty and wellness rather than simply shopping for products.
The spa extends the brand’s use of Korean herbal traditions into treatments and incorporates the same design approach found throughout the flagship.
If you are planning a Seoul beauty itinerary, combining a visit to the Dosan flagship with a spa treatment is a good way to experience more of the brand in one location.
My Sulwhasoo Review After Visiting Seoul
After experiencing Sulwhasoo in Seoul, I understand the brand much better than I would have from simply trying its products at home.
The boutiques make a significant difference.
You see how the brand connects its skincare products with Korean heritage, ginseng research, design and wellness. You also get a much better sense of the positioning and level of detail that goes into the Sulwhasoo experience.
From the products themselves, the First Care Activating Serum is the one I would be most curious to continue using consistently. It has a clear role in the routine and is easy to incorporate after cleansing.
The Gentle Cleansing Foam makes sense as a straightforward first step, while the Overnight Vitalizing Mask is useful when I want something richer in the evening.
For travel, I also like the practicality of the Perfecting Cushion.
Overall, what I appreciated most was the consistency between the products, the packaging, the boutiques and the spa experience. Everything feels like part of the same brand.
How I Would Build a Sulwhasoo Korean Skincare Set
If you want to create a simple Korean skincare set with Sulwhasoo, you do not need to buy the entire range.
I would structure it like this:
Morning
- Gentle Cleansing Foam
- First Care Activating Serum
- Eye cream
- Moisturiser
- Sunscreen
- Perfecting Cushion if you want complexion coverage
Evening
- Gentle Cleansing Foam
- First Care Activating Serum
- Eye cream
- Treatment or moisturiser
- Overnight Vitalizing Mask when you want a richer final step
The exact routine will depend on your skin type and the other products you already use, but this gives you a simple starting point.
Why Sulwhasoo Was One of My Seoul Beauty Highlights
Seoul has no shortage of beauty experiences. During my trip, I visited salons for a scalp treatment, explored Korean skincare and wellness, and discovered several different approaches to beauty.
Sulwhasoo stood out for a different reason.
The brand has created a complete environment around its products. The boutiques are exceptionally designed, the connection to Korean heritage is clear, and the spa adds another dimension to the experience.
For me, that made visiting Sulwhasoo in Seoul much more interesting than simply buying a Korean skincare set online.
You get to see the brand in its original context.
And after coming back from Seoul, that is what I will remember most: not just the products I brought home, but seeing how a Korean beauty brand can combine skincare, design, heritage and wellness into one experience.
