What to Wear to Accentuate your Waist

Creating the illusion of a curvier body can be quite easy if you know where to begin.

If you dress for your body type, you can accentuate the best parts of your body and minimise your least favourite features. Bodycon silhouettes and waist-cinching belts are always an option, but there are a lot of other ways to accentuate your waist without having to strap yourself in.

Peplum tops, jackets and skirts can flatter the waist and is visually slimming.

When it sits on the bodice, they flounce at the hem and covers the widest part of the hips. This look is best paired with a knee length pencil skirt.

If you’re naturally blessed with a small waist, opt for tailored jackets and blazers with waist construction and darts. Pair it with straight-leg, bootleg or flared pants for a sophisticated look.

Lower necklines, especially deep Vs can break up the chest area and narrows down in the direction of the waist.

Blouses and button-downs should nip you in at the waist for a fitted silhouette without adding any additional bulk to the chest area.

This is best achieved with soft and lightweight fabrics over stiff and structured fabrics. Style them tucked into a high waisted skirt or trouser that hug your hips before draping downward.

You want to avoid any ruffles, pockets and other bulky features at the hips as this will create bottom-heaviness and takes away from your narrow waist.

As for dresses, a classic sheath dress can do wonders on your body where it’s tailored around the bust and waist with a straighter skirt.

For a closer fit, wrap dresses can pull you in at the waist and are made to suit all body shapes.

Direct the attention from your hips up to the waist with dresses or skirts that flare out from the hip downward. Belted dresses are great at making your waist look smaller and highlight your curves.

During colder months, bodycon and straight sweater dresses accessorised with a thin belt at the waist is a beautiful way to flatter the waist.

Dresses with strategically designed geometric shapes and pattern can help create the illusion of an hourglass figure so look for lines that narrow at the waist to visually slim the waistline.
